Hot Fun In The Summertime

Not much is new since our last post. We'll be workamping here until mid-October which, while giving us opportunities to spend time with loved ones and also to get caught up on doctor and dentist visits, means that there might not be much that's interesting enough to share in this blog. That being the case, I'm going to go into my archive of photos and share those with you. I'll also share some stories from past adventures that I haven't yet written about.

With the departure of Spring, all 2 1/2 days of it, Summer in Northern Illinois is in full swing. It's been raining almost every day or night for the last month or so, but now the temperature has risen and the humidity has set in. So have the insects.

In addition to the normal mosquito population, we have another breed known as Flood Mosquitos. The floodies are particularly hungry, aggressive, and are out the whole day from dawn to dusk. They also have no respect for insect repellant. They SUCK! Literally.

We're also being plagued by an over abundance of gnats. Gnats are fun. They don't bite, they crawl all over you, and they have just enough mass to let you know that they're crawling all over you. They really like bug-dope, and if you're using an oily type, like DEET, they stick it you and wiggle around trying to get free. They REALLY like to fly into your eyes, down your throat and up your nose.

Because of all the rain, the usually clear and calm Kishwaukee River is running high and fast. There's logs and branches floating by at a pretty good clip. I'm not real comfortable kayaking or wading (my preferred method of fishing) under these conditions. I can see me standing waist deep in the water when a log comes by and plows into me like a battering ram. AAAAHHHHHH!!! Fishing from shore isn't working out very well because I can't keep any kind of bait from being taken downstream with the current, and eventually ending up along the bank. Even a 1 oz. jig with a 1/4 oz, grub won't stay where I want it.  I'll have to try some lakes.

In the meantime,  don't forget to visit my Online Photo Galleries.
